Chapter 34: Duties
Nathaniel
"How long were you going to keep this from me, Nate? This is too important to keep a secret!" she demanded.
"I know, I know! But you know damn well why I did it!" I shouted.
"Son... you don't understand... you know very well that such a relationship is not possible!"
"No, Mom! You're the one who doesn't understand!"
We had to come to the forest because I knew the discussion would become heated. My mother had always been very supportive, but it seemed that current events were about to challenge everything.
"You don't know what it's like to have a destiny mate. Not only do I want her and think about her every day, I have to hide her from everyone... and then there are all the conflicts I've already explained to you," I told her angrily.
I had told her about Marco and the Council because the first thing my mother told me was that my mate was a traitor. And Penelope wasn't!
"I didn't mean it, Mom..." I apologized. and She sighed and came toward me.
"I... I don't have a true mate. So honestly, I can't know what you're feeling. But I have to say... when I came here, I knew you would be with a woman. I thought maybe it was a crush or an attraction, but when I saw her, I assumed there was something more. I knew you couldn't possibly choose her. You wouldn't be in her house, smelling like her..." she said, and I sighed. Because it's true. The Nathaniel of a few weeks ago... would never be with her.
"But with all that, son... you're going to have to face the pack and present her. You're going to have to convince them that a human girl is going to be the Luna of the pack..." she reminded.
My mother summed up my fears in one sentence.
"I've thought about it a thousand times, Mom, but I can't find a solution. And although it is one of the things that worries me the most, it is not the worst thing that could happen," I said and breathed in deeply.
"She still doesn't accept me. The bond draws us together... but deep inside, Penelope hasn't forgiven me, and I don't blame her. And being human... she can resist the bond. At least more than I can." My mother hugged me. "You know, this seemed crazy to me at first, but... I think the Goddess paired you for a reason, even if we don't yet understand it,"
"And... I'm sorry there are so many problems... but I must add one more. Your father has been going behind your back...not with bad intentions, but to help you. He has contacted other Alphas, he is looking for a Luna for you. And with that, he can get the pack into trouble," she said. I could feel Hunter howling.
"I'm the Alpha! He can't just act like that!" I yelled, and my mom patted my arm.
"Nate, I'm afraid he supports the idea of oppressing humans and taking their territory. He's blinded by revenge for what he thinks happened so many years ago," she mentioned.
"I don't know how to talk to him, and I'm not ready to introduce Penelope to the pack because she has to accept me first," I said, imagining all the possible scenarios, only one of which was positive. One where miraculously, she was accepted. "I'll help you, son. Your father... you know he doesn't listen to me much, but I can do something," she said, and I hugged her.
I got that feeling again that I'm not alone... that I had a group of people watching my back, and it felt really good. Another ally.
"You have to bring her into the pack. That's where she belongs, otherwise she wouldn't be chosen as the Luna."
"That's the hard part, Mom. I don't know how to convince her." Suddenly she cupped my cheeks.
"You seem different, Nate," she said, smiling.
"My wolf said we are stronger because we are with our mate," I told her, but she shook her head.
"It's not just that. You're more considerate and loving, and I think it's because of her, her influence," she said happily.
By the time we got back to Penelope's house, dinner was over and everyone was nervously waiting for us. My mate gave my mother an uncomfortable glare, and I knew they both didn't know how to react. Suddenly, I got a mind link from one of my warriors.
"Alpha, we have suspicious behavior from the Crimson Fangs pack!" Damn it!
"Guys, we have a problem," I broke the silence.
"I just got the message. We need to find out what's going on," Roger said.
"Twins, can you stay with your sister? Michael, go back to the herd and get the warriors ready in case Marco tries something."
"Mom, could you stay with Penelope until I get back?" They all did as I asked.
I went ahead with Roger to see what they were doing. I found Marco and his men in a strange warehouse on a farm.
"There's some strange movement, Alpha. I don't know if it's Marco stealing something from the humans or what, but something very mysterious is going on. Also, we've seen humans coming here and then disappearing..." one of my warriors updated me.
"Have you found any victims? Any bodies?" I asked in a panic.
"Nothing, no traces of anything, just the smell of humans," he said.
"Maybe they're taking the humans somewhere else," Roger mentions.
"You were right to report it. This isn't normal... Let's go!" I said and appeared in front of Marco.
"Wow, wow! If it's not the mighty Alpha Nate! What are you doing here in a forgotten town like this?" he asked me mischievously.
"I could say the same, Marco. No doubt you are far from your territory, and you know very well that we should not interfere in human affairs," I said, and he snorted.
"Soon this will be werewolf territory. Let's just say I'm testing the waters," he said, and his men chuckled.
"Not until the council says so," I reminded him as he approached me.
"It's just a matter of time, Nate. You and I both know the Council will vote in my favor. There is nothing the werewolves like more than an available piece of land to take. We live and die for our territories, after all."
"This is the place of many, especially innocent people," I told him, growling. Many of his men back away, stunned by the Alpha power I exuded.
"Why don't you tell the truth, Nathaniel? Why don't you admit you want this territory for yourself? You've been too close to the humans lately... and I didn't see that coming, especially after what happened at Moonstone," he said.
"We werewolves have to respect all species, whether we like them or not," I said firmly. He was already very close to me when he told me, almost in a whisper, but very clearly, "You're so interested in the fat human traitor that belonged to your pack that you expelled yourself."
I roared. "Marco, don't you dare!"
"Oh, are you charmed by her curves yet? Let's face it, she's got a lot of flesh. Of course, she's not exactly my type. I like them skinny and model fit, but everyone has their tastes... and I must admit she does have her charms..." he said, gesturing to his chest as if he would grab two breasts and massage them.
I immediately pushed him hard, and he stepped back laughing. Both our wolves stood at attention to protect their Alphas. I roared and they all covered their faces. I could see his warriors huddled on the ground by my power.
"Don't you dare speak that way about a woman! You're a damn shame!" I roared him through clenched teeth. He looked at me haughtily and stood proud.
"The contact with humans has affected Alpha Nate too much. He might even forget who his allies are, his friends who were with him in his greatest time of need... he may even forget his kind!" he declared boldly. I roared as his werewolves carried him away from me. I stood there, breathing heavily.
"Marco did everything he could to tempt you, Alpha, but you were stronger," Roger said.
"I barely made it. If I had attacked him here, he would have declared war on us. And I think that's what he wants. An excuse. Marco is getting more and more followers and Alpha allies. If we don't show his true intentions as soon as possible, we'll be in his hands," I said.
"No doubt he's being suspicious," said Roger.
"Yes, we have to take care of Penelope no matter what," I said. When I got back to her house, I immediately felt good just having her around.
Penelope was tense from everything that had happened - from her father finding out about us, to my mother appearing out of nowhere in her own house. My mother left and the twins were sleeping downstairs. I went to Penelope's bed, pulled her to me, and hugged her.
I needed to comfort her as much as I needed her to comfort me.
"Did something happen?" she asked shyly and I knew that if I wanted her by my side, she had to be involved in things. It wasn't fair to leave her out.
"Marco is looking for a confrontation, he wants to take over part of the human territory," I said and we talked for a while. She also told me about the disappearances in the town.
"Do you think there will be an attack? We can't fight them, Nate..." she said, worried. I could feel her shaking.
"Don't worry, baby. Trust me. Trust that I won't leave you alone for anything in the world, and your worries are my worries."
I had to convince her to stay with the pack while we came up with a plan. Humans couldn't know that werewolves existed. That would just make everything more complicated. While she was in my arms, I fought the urge to carry her and take her back to the pack against her will. What would I become, then?
I had to convince her, had to make her fall in love with me... or her life would be in danger. And so will mine.
