Chapter CHAPTER 233
He was about to call Damian when he saw headlights.
He jumped out of the car and sprinted over to the Jeep.
The car was empty.
Over here!' Damian waved at him from the woods on the left side of the road.
He saw Kira crouching on the floor, her back against a tree.
Her head was lowered.
She was drenched from head to toe.
The coat draped over her shoulders didn't seem to be of much help.
She didn't react to the sound of footsteps.
A sudden pain stabbed through Austyn's heart at the sight of her pitiful state.
'She refuses to let me touch her,' Damian said, relieved. 'Won't talk. Won't stand up. I couldn't get her to the Jeep.' Austyn nodded.
He bent down in front of her. 'Kira.'
His soft voice was almost drowned out by the storm.
Kira's face was buried in her knees.
She didn't seem to have heard him.
Austyn reached out a hand.
As soon as his fingers touched her shoulder, she recoiled in fear.
Austyn placed both hands firmly on her shoulders.
He had to shout. 'Kira, look at me!"
Kira raised her head slowly.
It was hard to tell whether the water on her face was rain or tears, but her eyes were red and puffy.
Her cheeks were pale, her lips bloodless.
Her eyes were unfocused.
She was in shock.
'A...Austyn?'
'It's me."
'Austyn?'
'It's me."
"Austyn?"
""Kira, it's me."
Kira hurled herself into his arms.
The impact knocked him back on his haunches.
Austyn shot out one arm to steady himself and the other to steady her.
"You're back!' Kira cried.
Her sobs were punctuated by erratic peals of thunder.
'I chased after you for so long....My legs were killing me, but you kept driving away. You left! Why did you leave me?... I don't want you to see Kayleigh! I don't! I don't want to lose you to her!" Her tears scalded Austyn's heart.
Was that why she came out alone in the dark?
To chase after him?
This place was at least ten miles away from the villa.
She wasn't even wearing shoes!
Austyn tightened his arms around her.
He'd said he was going to Kayleigh's place in the heat of the moment.
He was so enraged back then, so jealous.
Jealous of the five hours Kira had spent with Liam.
He knew Kira wouldn't cheat on him, but he just couldn't help thinking about it.
He had to leave the house before he did or said anything he might regret.
he didn't i
But to Kayleigh's place; he went to Luca's.
If he knew she would chase after him in the storm, he would have stayed in the study or even the living room.
Austyn waited for the pain in his chest to subside before standing up, with Kira in his arms.
He smelled blood.
