Chapter 221
In a quiet corner of the living room, Billie sat at a small table by the window, meticulously preparing coffee.
She had no desire to confront Elizabeth directly—it would only lead to discomfort for both of them.
Nor did she wish to act the part of a gracious, affectionate mother-in-law in the presence of others.
So, she withdrew to her tranquil spot, seeking a moment of solace amidst the party’s commotion.
Shawn observed her deft movements as she poured the coffee and casually praised her.
“Among the James family, your coffee is unmatched.”
Billie returned his compliment with a poised smile.
“Shawn, I’m glad you appreciate it, but too much coffee this late isn’t wise.
It could keep you awake all night.”
“Billie, make coffee for me and Elizabeth as well.”
Before she finished brewing the coffee, Melany arrived, accompanied by Elizabeth and Elijah.
Elizabeth greeted them with polite cordiality.
“Shawn, Billie.”
Shawn, who was well aware of the couple’s strained marriage due to Billie’s observations, scrutinized them keenly.
With the sagacity that comes with age, he offered his advice.
“Marriage is seldom simple.
Even the most harmonious couples have their differences.
The key is to understand each other and strengthen the connection.”
To Elizabeth’s astonishment, Elijah replied without delay.
Moving closer, he placed his arm around her slender shoulders in a gesture of closeness.
“That’s exactly what we’ll do.
If fortune favors us, by this time next year, you’ll be holding a great-grandchild.”
Elizabeth’s eyes widened.
For a man as reserved and calculated as Elijah, such a declaration—especially in front of family—was unexpected.
Her mind raced with questions.
Had he truly considered this? What exactly was he planning?
It couldn’t possibly involve her—was he referring to Sandra and her child instead?
Elijah’s piercing gaze noticed her overthinking, her bright eyes flitting with unease.
He gave a subtle smirk but chose to remain silent.
Shawn, however, was thrilled by the idea.
His face brightened with a wide grin.
“Marvelous, marvelous! Four generations under one roof would truly be a blessing.”
Melany, on the other hand, wasn’t entirely convinced.
She was privy to the truth—that the couple had never even consummated their marriage.
With a sly smile, she remarked, “Don’t just make claims to please us.
If you’re serious about having a baby, you’ll need to make an effort.
Cut back on the drinking at those endless social gatherings.”
“Understood, Grandma,” Elijah agreed with apparent earnestness.
Billie, uninterested in prolonging the discussion, stood and gracefully handed Melany a cup of coffee.
Her gaze briefly flickered toward Elizabeth’s necklace—a piece that seemed to draw attention wherever she went.
