Chapter 3 — Trust
The next morning I woke with a new sense of determination in my plan to seek revenge on Ellis and Amanda. I noticed that Amanda had already left when I woke up, so I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to place the last hex bag and some cameras in her house while she was gone. It was a little harder getting into her house. Thankfully I had my hook and pick set in my bag of tools. I noticed I couldn't put my camera's in the vents, since they were located on the floor, so I pulled out the ones that looked like animals and meticulously placed them in every room of her house, with the exception of placing two in the living room. Then I placed the hex bag under the kitchen sink. After that, I gathered up my things and made sure the door was locked as I left her house.
After my quick shower and change of clothes, I headed for my café to meet the delivery truck so I could begin setting everything up. My daughters showed up for work. I got them busy setting up the tables and chairs in the front while I got the coffee beans and other goodies stocked up. Before long, we had the café all set up and ready for opening day, which was in two days. We looked around at the shop and all the work we had done in such a short period of time. We had the tables set up with the computers hooked up. We had a bar stool table set for the customers who just wanted a cup of coffee. Also, we had placed some big bean bags beside the walls for the occasional teenager who wanted to use their tablet or phone. Since it was snowing out, I closed up earlier than I was planning and took the girls home, telling them I would see them tomorrow.
I put on my pajamas and set up my protective circle, ready to start the next phase in my plan, which was to activate the hex bags that I had hidden in Ellis's and Amanda's vehicles and houses. After that, I sat back in bed and watched the live feed from their houses. It didn't take long to see a spirit manifest itself and scare the wholly hell out of Amanda. I laughed as I heard her scream and dash out of her house to Ellis's in just her nightgown. But he wasn't fairing much better because the lights kept flickering on and off, except in the girls' rooms or in any room that they were in. I made sure that the girls wouldn't be harmed in any of my spells, but if Ellis or Amanda was in the same room with them, the lights would go out. So not figuring this out, Kaylee and Laura ran to my front door, leaving the adults to fend for themselves. I set the girls up in the spare rooms, then shot a text message to Ellis, letting him know where the girls were. I sat up a little longer, watching the live feed from his house up until his lights went completely out, which was my cue that it was time for me to go to sleep.
The girls woke the next morning to me making them a breakfast of waffles with fresh fruit. Then I sent them home so they could get ready for school. As I watch them go into their house, I see that the lights are back on, also to my amazement, I see two weary adults sitting on the couch, not even noticing the girls are home. They just sit there looking straight ahead. I sit back and smile at the sight for a minute, then as I watch the girls leave, I go over nonchalantly to see if they are ok because it wouldn't be any fun if they broke down already. I cackle to myself at this thought as I knock on Ellis's door. It takes him a little while to answer the door, but when he does, he just sticks his head out.
"Hi, I just thought I would check on you since the girls really didn't say what was going on over here. They had just asked if they could stay the night last night?" I ask.
"Yea, everything's fine. Just had a fight with the girlfriend. Thanks for letting the girls stay the night." He replies yawning.
"Ok, well, as long as you're ok, I better head to work, and the girls are welcome over any time, just so you know," I say, then head off down the road. A few hours later, Ellis shows up at the café looking a little better. "I'm sorry about this morning. I didn't get any sleep last night." He explains.
"It's ok, I could tell. I was just curious why you said that you and Amanda were fighting when you weren't?"
"How do you know that?"
"I told you that the girls really didn't tell me much. I never said what they had told me."
"What did they tell you then?" He asked nervously.
"They just said that some strange things were going on and that they were scared." I explain. "So, do you want to explain what happened?"
"I guess, but I don't want to bother you since your working."
I smile, "There's one good thing about being your own boss, you can take a break without getting into trouble."
He laughs. "Ok." He starts. "Do you believe in ghosts?" He asks, staring at me with a questionable look on his face.
"Yes, I do believe in ghosts," I answer. "Are you saying your house is haunted?" I ask, trying hard not to laugh.
"Yes." He says, trying to stifle a yawn. "I don't know when it started. All I know is that my ex-wife was into witchcraft. I think that she brought the ghosts into our home.
"I also believe that she was possessed, and that is what broke up my family, but now things have gotten worse. Last night, the lights were going off and on by themselves, except when the girls were in a room by themselves. Then when they came into the living room with me, the lights went out completely, then came the noises. That's when the girls went to your house." Ellis explained with fear in his eyes.
I shake my head. "So you're saying that a ghost broke up your family and is still haunting you?" I ask. "But why?"
"I don't know, I wish I knew." He says, then gets up. "But thanks for listening to me."
I stand up and give him a hug "Anytime." I say.
When he leaves, I get back to work, knowing tomorrow is the grand opening. Later on, when Kaylee and Laura show up for work, I show them and my other employees how I would like them to take orders, along with other things that they will be doing. Thankfully when I had the Wi-Fi set up, they showed me how I could regulate the use of the internet on the computers. By the end of the day, everyone knew how to work everything from the registers to the cappuccino machine. We all were excited and nervous about the grand opening tomorrow. I sent everyone home and told them to make sure that they went to bed early because we're going to be busy tomorrow and I wanted them rested.
Opening day came and went without a hitch. I was so proud of how my daughters handled themselves with some of the rude customers that they had to wait on. They are definitely mine. Also, to our surprise, my youngest son, Preston, showed up for the grand opening. I couldn't get over how much he had grown. There are so many things you miss out on when your ex keeps your kids away from you.
