Chapter 42
Not only did Allison recognize the strange feeling of familiarity, but Kellan also felt an eerie vibration.
As they dealt with the killer with precision, they couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong between them.
The killer, cornered against the edge of the cliff, hissed in frustration.
“Damn it!”
In her critical condition, she desperately lunged at Allison.
Already precariously positioned on the edge of the slope, Allison lost her balance and swayed dangerously.
In an instant, Kellan leapt forward and grabbed her wrist.
“I got you!”
However, in the dark chaos, both of them plummeted down the slope.
Allison felt Kellan’s firm embrace around her waist, his arm protecting her head as they fell together.
Their descent slowed as they collided with a tree and fell to the ground with a jarring impact.
Allison realized during the disorienting fall that Kellan had used his body as a shield to protect her.
When they stopped, Allison checked her injuries.
There were minor cuts on her arm, but Kellan was much worse.
His forearms and legs were slashed, and the fall had left his right arm and leg fractured, as well as numerous abrasions.
In intense pain but conscious, Kellan slowly opened his eyes and cried out, “Help me.
My right arm is dislocated.
”
Allison moved quickly and effectively put his arm back in place.
Sweat glistened on Kellan’s forehead as he watched Allison’s every move.
Not only did he realign her dislocated shoulder, but he also set her fractured fingers in place with a wince.
She was tough and undeniably captivating, and she handled her own injuries with great skill.
“Lean against this tree for now,” Allison instructed calmly, removing her jacket to turn it into makeshift bandages.
She turned the sleeves into a pillow for his head and wrapped a cloth around his arm to staunch the bleeding.
After a quick inspection, she assessed the surroundings.
“There’s a cave nearby.
We need to get out of the rain before we catch a fever or something worse.
”
Rain could cause body temperatures to plummet in the highlands, leading to fevers and illness.
“Okay,” Kellan agreed, trying to stand but receiving gentle support from Allison.
With a firm resolve, Allison helped him to his feet and they headed to the cave.
Inside, away from the incessant rain, they found some solace.
Allison carefully placed Kellan against the stone wall of the cave.
She gathered dry branches and quickly lit a fire to chase away the damp chill that clung to them.
As the fire crackled, she picked up two sturdy branches.
“I tried to call for help,” Allison said, her voice calm but tense.
“But there’s no signal here because of the rain.
Emanuel will notice we’re missing and send someone to find us.
”
He gently adjusted Kellan’s leg, speaking precisely.
“This isn’t a dislocation.
It’s a fracture.
I’ll need to stabilize it to prevent further damage.
” Kellan nodded, enduring the pain in silence.
His mind went back to the Allison he'd met two years ago in the office: cool but too docile.
Then there was the Allison from the cruise ship bed, attractive and dominant, and now this Allison, skilled in both ceramics and medical treatments.
Which of these versions was true?
Watching her skillfully bandage his wounds, he wondered how often she found herself in such dangerous situations.
Allison stood up and patted his coat.
“Wearing this will trap your body heat.
Let me dry it off.
”
Kellan complied, removing his shirt to reveal his well-defined muscles and a constellation of old scars across his abdomen.
As Allison shook off her wet clothes, a necklace fell from the folds: a flawless pearl set with a red agate, shining even in the dim light.
Allison's eyes widened in recognition: the necklace she had lost that night.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Although both tried to maintain their composure, the recognition was palpable.
The crackling of the fire cast their intertwined shadows on the cave wall, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.
"I'll dry the clothes," Allison said.
“I’ll add more firewood,” Kellan replied.
They spoke simultaneously, then turned to look for something they could use as a weapon, each lost in their own thoughts as the storm raged outside.
