The sight of them together stung Hansel’s eyes. He watched Sam’s back with reddened eyes and slammed his fist onto the steering wheel.
He wanted so badly to storm out, grab Sam by the collar, and punch him hard.
But then a thought struck him.
What right did he have to confront Sam? As an ex–boyfriend who couldn’t move on? Or as an old friend from back then?
Hansel pursed his lips into a bitter smile. In the end, he could only watch on in silence as the two of them went upstairs.
Sam prepared to leave after helping Miranda bring the bags to her door.
Miranda poured a glass of water in the living room and handed it to him. “Thanks, Sam. Have some water before you go.”
Sam looked up at her and replied in a hoarse voice, “Alright.”
Miranda started tidying up the gifts. She planned to organize them in detail the next day when a sudden bang startled her. It was a gust of wind that slammed the balcony door against the door frame as she had forgotten to close it earlier in the day.
She remembered the potted plants on her balcony. If the wind knocked them over and they fell on someone beneath, it could be disastrous. She quickly stopped what she was doing and went to move the plants inside.
One of the pots was particularly heavy. She tried moving it several times, but it wouldn’t budge. At that moment, a pair of hands reached over. He gripped the base of the pot and lifted it with ease.
Sam said, “Let me.”
Miranda exhaled in relief. “Thanks, Sam.”
As she withdrew, her hands accidentally brushed against his. She thought nothing of it, but Sam’s gaze darkened briefly. However, he kept a neutral expression that revealed no emotion.
Sam moved the flourishing pot of parlor palm into the room effortlessly. Seeing that, Miranda pointed to several other pots and said sheepishly, “This one, and those too need to be moved inside…‘
Sam laughed in exasperation. “Do I look like a mover to you?”

Miranda shook her head. “Of course not, but you’re my older cousin. You said it yourself. I should ask for your help if I have a problem.”
For a moment, Sam was at a loss for words. To hell with being her cousin!
He felt like he was losing his mind. No matter what she called him, the words that came out of her mouth sounded inexplicably pleasant to his ears.
It hadn’t seemed like much work to Miranda when she was caring for these potted plants. But now, Miranda finally realized just how exhausting it was moving pot after pot inside
the room!
After they finally finished moving the pots, she was about to grab the watering can from the balcony when Sam remarked, “You’ve got some dirt on your face.”
“Here?” she asked.
“No.” Sam pulled a tissue from the box and stepped forward to help her wipe it off.
Before his hand could touch her, Miranda retreated and took a small mirror from the drawer. Then, she used a tissue to clean her face while looking into it.
“Why go to so much trouble? Isn’t this way simpler?” Miranda said while laughing.
Sam withdrew his hand calmly as he suppressed the storm brewing in his eyes. He chuckled softly and said, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll head out now.”
“Alright.” Miranda saw him off at the door.
Hansel was still waiting at the entrance of the alley downstairs. He had been sitting in the car for half an hour, staring uneasily at the entrance to the apartment building. All kinds of scenarios were playing out in his mind.
Seeing the lit window on the seventh floor, Hansel fought hard to resist the urge to go upstairs and knock on her door. Would Sam be staying the night?
The thought of them living together flashed through his mind. In that instant, a sharp pain tore through his chest.
Just as he was teetering on the edge of despair, he suddenly saw Sam walk out of the building. His tensed nerves relaxed at that moment. He felt an overwhelming sense of relief, but a bitter taste surged in his mouth.
Someone knocked on his window. Hansel turned his head and rolled down the car window.
Sam stood beside his car and gave him a meaningful smile. “Are you still going to claim it’s just a coincidence this time?”
He had used the same lame excuse far too many times. Even he himself barely believed it
anymore.

Hansel’s grip on the steering wheel tightened instinctively as he narrowed his eyes. knew I was downstairs all along.”
It wasn’t a question.
“That’s right,” Sam replied honestly without hiding the truth.
“You
Hansel’s knuckles turned pale, and he felt anxiety gnawing away at his heart. “Are you two together?”
Sam chuckled lightly, but he refused to answer. It wasn’t because he and Miranda weren’t together yet. Even if they were, he wouldn’t turn it into something to boast about.
Because he and Hansel…
They were different.
