Chapter 90

After about half an hour, the door was pushed open gently.

Calla was standing in front of the wall and admiring one of the paintings. She turned to see Mercer walking in, and she scrutinized his expression. Although he looked as cold and impassive as always, he did not betray any sign of having argued with Rose.

“These paintings are pretty good.” Calla smiled slightly to mask the awkwardness.

Mercer’s lips twitched, and he said, “These are genuine Karl John paintings

Calla stuck out her tongue, realizing that she had revealed her ignorance. She asked, “How famous is he?”

Among his contemporaries, he’s probably ranked between third to sixth. The ones ranked first and second are in my father’s study and safe. Even I’m not allowed to look at them for no reason,” he answered.

These paintings probably cost millions or more. Those that were ranked first and second would probably be hundreds of millions. Calla had known that Mercer’s family was rich, but she hadn’t expected him to be this rich.

A random article in their home could be an antique that was thousands of years old. No wonder Rose immediately suspected any woman that Mercer was with of being after his money.

“Are you hungry? We can eat now,” Mercer said when he saw the surprise in her eyes.

Okay.” She nodded.

Mercer was amused to see how longingly she was looking at the paintings. “If you like them, I’ll give you

two.”

“No! I don’t want to get caught by the police and be accused of theft. Besides, I’m afraid of getting robbed, too. If I carry these around, it would be like carrying a ticking time bomb. It’s much safer to leave them here.”

Calla suddenly remembered that there was a police station just a few hundred feet away from Garland Mansion. This was probably intentional. After all, their family wasn’t just rich, they were also important government officials.

Mercer burst into a fit of laughter. Calla never ceased to surprise him, and it always made him laugh.

They sat around the huge dining table in the residence.

There were more than ten beautifully plated dishes placed on the table, including a variety of pastries and desserts. The cutlery was made of yellow porcelain, which perfectly matched the mahogany furniture. Calla felt as if she had walked into a palace.

“Our family chef’s specialty is the royal cuisine of Kalva. Try it. It tastes pretty good,” Mercer said as he hegan eating.

Calla looked up at the head of the table, which was the seat opposite Mercer’s.

Mercer understood what she was curious about, so he explained, “My mother had a sudden engagement with one of her friends, so she isn’t eating at home. It’s just the two of us for lunch today.”

Calla smiled relaxedly, and she began to sample the dishes, most of which she had never seen before. She had been wondering how awkward it would be to eat with Rose, and even though her stomach had been growling, she had expected not to be able to eat much. However, since Rose wasn’t around, she no longer had to worry about submitting to anyone.

Mercer saw how relaxed she looked, and he said casually, “I didn’t expect you to not be scared of my mother at all.”

Calla glared at him. “It’s not like she has a couple of extra heads. Why should I be scared of her? I’m just giving way to her because she’s your mother and also my mother–in–law on paper.

Mercer’s lip curled. “I’ve never seen anyone talk to her that way before.”

“I’m just doing what I need to do. No one is born to be humiliated. Besides, she was accusing me of such a ridiculous thing, and I didn’t want to admit to it,” she said, pursing her lips.
