Chapter 11
Katherine's
POV
"...that a great leader will be born created from the Goddess' blood... She will be treated like she doesn't belong..."
I huffed and rolled my eyes... not believing a word Elder Elsa was saying...
Yet, Elder Elsa continued...
"... until one day, when she will rise from the ashes and lead and free her people..!"
His closeness was sucking me in and I swallowed hard, feeling his breath whispered against my skin.
Was he about to kiss me?
Would he dare?
Was I ready?
"Xavier..." his name sounded like a whimper when it left my lips, as I dropped my gaze, "I'm not..."
"Ready..." he completed my thought, I nodded my head slowly, feeling the most excruciating pain ripple through my heart, and tears burning behind my eyes.
"I know..." he said a bit disappointed, sighed, and brushed his hand through his thick shining raven hair as he lifted his gaze to the sky...
Xavier stood frozen looking at the sky for a moment before he dropped his gaze and smiled... his eyes had returned to blue, and I sighed, relieved...
"Come..." he said and took my hand and led me towards the vehicle his driver waited in.
He opened the passenger door and helped me inside.
"I will speak to you soon," he said, closing the door.
I gave him a shy smile in return, knowing that even though I said I was not ready, Xavier had already found a way into my heart and he was lowly breaking down the walls around my heart...
I sighed, unlocked and opened the front door of my home, and was greeted by a chilling silence...
I slowly entered the foyer... unsure what to make of the coldness that surrounded the foyer...
**
It's been almost a week since Rose and Erika left to visit a luxury Spa in the city close by...
John gave all the staff off for the night when I walked into the quiet foyer. He had a meeting with his wife and daughter, minutes before he needed to leave for the meeting with Xavier...
Yet again, John sounded furious, and because there were no servants around, the office door stood open, just enough for me to see and hear them.
I assumed the meeting was due to my cold food posts earlier in the morning...
"Do you not take anything I say to heart at all?" John growled fiercely from behind his desk, "Don't you understand the consequences of the stupid things you do!?"
"Who knew she would go that far and post pictures of her food on Instagram..?" Erika lashed out, irritated.
"You still don't get it? Do you!?" John yelled, upset. "If you dare to do something so stupid again, I will send you to your mother's old pack and I will only allow you to return when everything has been settled! I can't believe that... that... that you can be so stupid! F*ck, really? Don't you have more than two brain cells?"
I raised my eyebrows, hearing John's threatening warning and crude words. He was angry and sounded dead serious.
Erika's face turned red and tears streamed down her face. She wasn't used to John speaking to her like that. John has always been a loving and soft-spoken father. These days he was shouting at her non-stop. Rose got up and comforted her daughter, not that it helped. Erika was so upset.
"John, I think Kate has changed..." Rose said, "she is not the same girl we used to know..." She sighed, before she continued, "Whether Kate has amnesia or not, we can no longer look at her the same way we used to..." "What do you suggest we do?" John asked, pinning his gaze on his mate.
"We need to find a way to make her disappear..." Rose suggested, "I understand that it will create issues regarding the takeover of the shares, but it will save us a lot of unnecessary arguments and heartache..."
John became quiet for a second, and it seemed like he was tempted by Rose's proposal, yet he answered his mate coldly. "Alpha Xavier Black has grown fond of Kate..." he said, "he will notice that she is gone and will ask uncomfortable questions. We can't just make her disappear... not yet anyways..."
Silence followed in the office for a minute, and for a second I thought they were done.
"If I could get my brother to eat out of my hand," John said, "I would certainly find a way to get Kate to do the same... and as soon as I have the shares and pack written over to me, I will..."
I yelped out fright as a vase made contact with the floor and pieces burst and scattered around the office.
I never saw it coming, my focus was pinned on John.
"Are you insane!?" John roared out of anger and stalked towards his office door.
I was just in time to hide behind the curtains as he rushed out of his office and stalked passed me in a hurry toward the front door, grabbing his coat, and opening and slamming the door behind him.
"Mom, do something about this!" Erika yelled at her mother like a spoiled brat, "Get Kate out of here! I am done with Kate throwing her weight around! I have waited long enough! I can't handle this sh*t anymore! I can't stand her even for a minute!" What have I done to deserve this? I have always treated my cousin with love and respect. Why has she turned hateful against me?
"Your father will deal with the Kate problem soon, just have some fate..." she said and sighed, "let her play the King Enterprise princess for a few more days, it will be over soon. I think a trip would do us some good... what do you say?" "Will we be going to a spa?" Erika sounded excited.
"Whatever your heart desires," Rose said.
"Okay, sounds fun..." Erika said, easily distracted.
Maybe John had it wrong, Erika only had one brain cell and not two as he thought...
I internally chuckled, Erika wasn't the sharpest pencil in the packet...
"When will we be leaving?" Erika asked, getting up.
"Now!" Rose said, "go get your things..."
Erika didn't hesitate and she left John's office in a hurry, leaving Rose behind.
"Julia, it's me," Rose's voice echoed through the quiet office, and I sensed that she was on the phone. Julia was the head housekeeper and worked for the family for more than twenty years.
I would have thought that Julia was loyal to my side of the family, but it seemed like John had some dirt on her.
"I need you to keep an eye on Kate for me... yes... I'll be out for a couple of days... Yes... I will be taking Erika with me... okay... okay... let me know if something is out of place..."
With that, she hung up and called John.
"John," she said coldly, "I'm leaving with Erika... make sure that you have found a way to get rid of Kate before our return..."
With that, she cut the call and stalked out the door.
An hour later, the two women left in one of my father's Mercedes.
I, on the other hand, was glad that the two left and had taken the opportunity and time to gain my pack's trust...
I have made sure to stay clear of Julia for now, that's until I knew where she fitted into the whole conspiracy puzzle.
In the last few days, I have spent numerous hours among the pack members... and in the beginning, the pack members were very unsure of what to make of my presence... That was until the pups scented me in the park, and joined me on the swings... For some reason, the kids were drawn to me, and everywhere I went, they would leave their parents' sides to come and sit with me.
That worried the pack members, a human girl shouldn't be mingling with the wolf crowd...
That was until one of the Councilor's mates came and explained what was happening.
"Luna Katherine," Elder Richard's mate, Elsa, greeted me as she came and sat down next to me on the bench.
It was the first time someone called me by my mother's title, and tears burned behind my eyes...
I have missed my mother so much and longed for her loving touch...
Elsa was the first pack member who dared to talk to me. I was surprised that she didn't care about the curious gaze that was constantly looking our way...
She was so bold that she even waved and smiled at the curious bypassers.
"Elder Elsa..." I greeted her back and gave her a broad smile. Her grey hair moved in the wind like waves and her dark brown chocolate eyes were soft and warm.
She wasn't a big she-wolf, yet her big and serious personality made up for her size...
I can vaguely remember from my younger days... and I always believed that she was way too serious for such a small wolf...
Yet, this old she-wolf sitting next to me was calm and relaxed, like she didn't have a care in the world and everything in life was going her way...
That made me suspicious of her and I suddenly wondered what she wanted...
I couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable and annoyed at the same time...
You see, my father kept me away from the pack my whole life... and as soon as he found out that I wasn't capable of shifting, he kept me even more secluded... which for obvious reasons made things even more complicated.
I grew up in the most elite boring schools my whole life, from the age of eight... and I excelled in them at the top of my class... yet my heart always longed for my people... my kind... my pack!
I always had this connection, feeling, and urge to be with my people... I guess it is in my blood... to be with my kind...
I knew I was different and I guess my father tried to protect me... for some reason, I couldn't shake the feeling that my father knew I wasn't capable of shifting... yet, now that he was gone, and him keeping me away from my people only created trust issues between me and the pack...
I sighed, I have always loved my people and my pack...
My father used to tell me stories about them and how wonderful pack life was... he told me how free it felt to run in wolf form, and how exciting it was to howl at the moon... yet when I asked if I could come home, he's answer was always no. He said that I needed a decent education to be able to run the pack one day and the company he had built... I will have my chance to meet and learn to know my people...
I believed and trusted my father, and obeyed his request... I trusted him blindly, as he did with John...
I sighed, the members knew that the Alpha and the Luna had a daughter, yet, no one had seen or talked to me since the age of eight...
"It is said..." Elder Elsa turned to me and sought my gaze, breaking my chain of thoughts.
Her soft dark brown chocolate eyes were full of warmth, yet excitement sparkled in them like she knew a secret and she wasn't sure if she would share...
"... that one day the pups will show us who to trust or not..."
My father once told me that the pack believed that Elder Elsa was capable of predicting the future... and her prediction always came true...
Yet, I wasn't so sure about her so-called predictions... if she could see the future, why hadn't she warned my parents of my uncle's upcoming betrayal..? She could have saved them and my parents could have been alive today...
"... there is a prophecy..." Elder Elsa said, and a smile played at the corners of her lips.
"What kind of prophecy..?" I asked, interested to know...
