Our Surprise Mate

Chapter 10-Betrayal

**Valentina~**

Why isn't she awake? It has been seven days, and Hazel's heart sounds weak. Our family doctor came right after she closed her eyes to insert a catheter, hook her up to a heart monitor, and put her on oxygen to take the stress off of her body. Doctor Green said it would most likely take her longer than most to wake because of the amount of neutralizer in her system, but she needed it from both of us to complete the bond. There was no other way, but I'm getting scared. What if something goes majorly wrong? Werewolves have more than one mate all the time, but they always recover quickly after being marked.

Tae is beginning to get anxious too. I know he is trying to be strong and positive for me, but we can sense something isn't right. I hate leaving Hazel's side because Lucas doesn't understand these things yet, and we won't let him come into our room while Hazel is in a coma. Thankfully, Tae and I can take turns sitting with her most of the time, but he can't always put work on hold. We had a hospital bed moved into our bedroom so we can be by her if she woke in the middle of the night. I'm about to lose my mind with all this worrying, so I'm calling Carlie. She always knows what to say when I get stressed out.

"Hey, Val. Are you okay?" Ash must be keeping her updated because I've been keeping to myself.

"No, I'm terrified. What if she doesn't come out of it? She would have been introduced to our parents by now and crowned." I had to put all the plans on hold, but people are getting impatient.

"I bet Hazel can hear you. I remember hearing Ash talk to me on the second day, but I couldn't respond. It's like my body and mind were at war with each other. It feels lonely when you're stuck in the darkness of a coma. It helped when he communicated with me because it gave me something to reach for. Do you guys talk to her?" I feel like a horrible mate. Hazel could be stuck right now with the ability to hear us, and we don't take the time to speak to her directly. We kiss her hands and head, but I didn't think she could hear.

"No, I had no idea she would be able to hear us. If talking to her would help wake her, I'll talk her ears off. I need my Hazie back." She might hate the little pet name I made up in my head the other day, but she's adorable and spunky at the same time.

"Hazie? Does she know about her new name?" Carlie laughs.

"She's about to find out because I'm going to talk to her. Could you watch Lucas for about an hour?" I want uninterrupted time with my beautiful woman.

"Of course. Lucas can spend the whole day with me. I'm making brownies and taking them to the orphanage. He was a huge help with the cookies we made, so I bet he would have fun." Carlie is always doing something for the community. Bringing goodies to the orphanage is something she does every week. She and Ash are thinking about adopting, and I want to ask Tae if he would consider it. That's a discussion we will have once Hazie wakes up.

"I think he would love that. Thank you so much!" We hang up, and I get Lucas ready. I made it a quick trip to drop him off, which was easy once he found out they were baking.

I go straight home and rush to our bedroom. Doctor Green is in the room checking her vitals when I open the door.

"How is she?" I ask.

"Let's talk in the hallway." We walk out of the room, and a ball forms in my throat. Something is wrong; I can feel it. "Her blood pressure is lower than before, which does worry me. Her heartbeat should be stronger by now, and I had to increase the oxygen. We will see how she does tomorrow."

"Maybe her heart is trying to get on the right beat. Maybe her transition is done, but she just needs to wake up." I'm going to stay positive.

"Her heart has not stopped and restarted yet. It's as if her body is rejecting the bond." That doesn't just happen, and I refuse to believe she would want to reject us.

"I would like time alone with my mate. Thank you." Doctor Green nods and leaves us alone.

I crawl into the bed beside her and rest my head beside hers. "Wake up, babe. We have so much to do, and there's a beautiful lake I want to show you. No one goes to it because it's on our property, so we can go skinny dipping in broad daylight if we wanted to. It's not like nudity is a huge deal in this territory, but being naked for the hell of it isn't something we do. I can't speak for half-bloods and full-bloods, though. They're always walking around naked because they lose control and rip their clothes off constantly. Clothes are basically a waste of time for them."

I take her hand and rub the back of it. "I'm sorry I haven't been talking to you. I didn't think you could hear me, but Carlie said she could hear after the first day. Doctor Green said he thinks your body is rejecting the bond. I don't believe it." Hazel's hand gently squeezes mine, and I'm filled with hope. "You can hear me. I knew you weren't rejecting us. What else can you move?"

I get off the bed to give her space. Hazel makes an 'X' into the sheet. "What are you trying to tell me? Can you spell it?"

She writes, "*Dr*' and then puts an '*X** "Yeah, I know he's wrong. Doctors think they know everything."

The next thing she writes makes me sick. **EVIL**

We have trusted Doctor Green, and he's been alone with her multiple times since we marked her. I never should have left her side. "Oh my god. I promise I won't leave you alone again, and we will take care of this. I'm so sorry, Hazel." I mindlink Tae. *Hazel is responsive but unable to speak or move anything other than her left hand. Get here immediately.*

He responds right away, *I'll be there in two minutes.*

He quickly bursts into the room well within two minutes, "What's going on?"

I explain everything from the beginning and didn't leave out a single detail. Tae looks like he is ready to rip off Doctor Green's head, but I want him kept alive so that we can get answers first. Tae is asking Hazel simple questions. I told her to put an '*O*' for yes and an '*X*' for no.

"Is Doctor Green a bad man?" She put an O.

"Does he talk about his plan?" She put an X.

"Is he the reason you can't speak or move?" She put an O.

"Does touch you inappropriately?" A tear sheds from her closed eye, and she puts an O.

"Why aren't we feeling it? Why can't we feel it when he's harming her?" I ask and swallow back the tears. I've had a heavy heart this last week, but it's because I've been worried about her.

"Is your body numb?" She put an O. He's paralyzing her with something.

"Does he tell you what he is doing to you?" She put another O.

"Doctor Green has been my doctor for the last fifteen years. I need to find out who else is involved. I'll have Niko and Blake meet me in my office. We will get to the bottom of this and handle him accordingly." He gives her a kiss and leaves. I can't wrap my head around what that fucker did to my Hazie, but he will pay with his life. I don't know who we can trust right now, but I know I need to get her blood tested to see what he is putting into her system when we aren't looking. I'll take the sample myself, and Tae will have Niko, his Beta, get it tested at the hospital lab.

"Has the doctor brought anyone here who should not have been here?" She puts an X.

"Okay. I'm going to take a blood sample and get it tested immediately. Do you still feel human?" She puts an X. That means she can hear and smell things that she would not have been able to as a human. That also means I can mindlink her.
